At some point most moms have heard "Oh, Mom, do I have to read?" "I just don't like reading"...unless your one of those "lucky" mom's who's children just naturally love reading :)
That is not the case with me. I love to read myself and I just thought "longingly" that when my children were old enough to read they would love it too. Well, I am there now and I have faced the battles of trying to get my children to read without a fuss. Not only without fussing but actually "enjoy" reading.

5 Simple Steps to Encourage the Reluctant Reader
1. Follow Interests
Listen up! It won’t be hard to figure out what your child is interested in. Maybe it’s horses, space, bugs, animals, princesses….whatever it is dive into those subjects! If you are struggling to find out what your child is interested in, go to the library begin looking at various subjects. I am sure you’ll find one your child likes

2. Schedule
Every day I include a block of time in our homeschool schedule just for “quite” reading time. I usually allow thirty minutes. During this time we turn off all distractions – computer, tv, etc. By doing so, it sets the tone for a great reading environment.
3. *Special* Space
In our home, we have a *special* space just for reading. Sweet Pea and Tutti Frutti each have their own bean bags. I have also included in this space a basket full of friends (they can choose one to cuddle with while reading) and a blanket. 
4. Fun Challenge!
This is one of the greatest and most successful tips I can give: make reading fun! How? Kids love games and they love challenges, create a reading challenge just for your child. One challenge idea, could be to fill up their reading log using stickers or stamps for a special treat or maybe a trip to their favorite place. Another option to make reading fun and a challenge is to do a 100 Book Challenge.
5. Example
One of the best ways to encourage your child to read is to lead by example. Let your child see you reading! Talk about books and the adventures they can take you on! Share memories of your favorite books as a child. Remember, your children are never to old for you to read them a story You can also include these stories you read to them in their reading log challenge.
Just remember don’t give up! Homeschooling your children is a fun and wonderful journey. Don’t sweat the small stuff!

Reading aloud and listening to books on CD can encourage reluctant readers too. I found that once my boys fell in love with stories they were more eager to read their own books.

DeleteYou could also make coloring pages based on book covers (the easy ones of course!) or if they are past that age, make em draw the cover pictures.

DeleteI teach 11th grade English, and just yesterday my students and I discussed why they do or do not like to read. It was so interesting to hear what they had to say. The number one issue: Choice. Almost all of them are willing to read if they have a choice of which book they want. And, most of the kids who like to read said their parents read regularly, so yes, setting an example is extremely important! Thanks for sharing :)
